Gayo rencong and peurise

Here my Gayo rencong, on top of an interesting shield!
The Gayo rencong is real big and feels great to handle. At the base of the blade there is a decorative brass piece with blue enamel. There is a similar piece in the Leiden museum collection which is also described/depicted in the Fisher catalogue. The shield has thick leather between the brass stars and the ratan. It used to have fabric between the leather and the brass stars, of which rests are still visible right under the stars. It is slightly bigger as the other peurises I have. Rg, Maurice |
Nice items.
I like the rencong!!! |
size matters :)
Hi Maurice,
Nice ensemble. How big is the rentjong ? Best regards, Willem |
Nice piece. I thought enamel was only for gold?

As far as I know the Gayo people weren't that rich and therefore they didn't use the gold as the Aceh people did. Here an image of the Leiden museum piece, and the drawing in the Fischercatalogue. This one has also a brass decoration with enamel. Maurice |

Hello Maurice,
I hoped that peurise would end up with you! BTW, I do wonder how many of the rattan peurise once had such a strong rawhide enhancement - did you had a peek under the fabric of your other examples? Regards, Kai |

Yes it is a beauty! Wasn't going to collect peurises, but somehow they all came by accidently. Now I like them very much! PS. none of the others have such strong leather piece beneath the stars. Regards, Maurice |
Hello Maurice,
very nice peurise and rentjong. Is the handle from the rentjong hippo ivory? Regards, Detlef |

I could not find a general thread on gayo rentjong.
So I wil just bust into Maurice's gayo thread. I found this picture of a Christies auction in 2005. Just wanted to share this unusual gayo piece (2nd from te left) Best regards, Willem |
