African axe and Knobkerrie
9 Attachment(s)
Recently bought these two items (seperately).I would be grateful for any information.
The axe has a forged head, the shaft has burnt (?) decoration with hand carved circles. Nicely balanced. Seems too good for a Tourist item .....dance axe or weapon? Possible origins ?? Early - mid 20th C ??....OAL 47 cms (18.5") The knobkerrie is well used....seems to have a 'root ball' head. Has good balance, age cracking and a lanyard hole. Again 'burnt' decoration... OAL 66cms (26") ball end widest 7cms (nearly 3") Mid 20th C ? Any ideas for possible origin. Thank you Regards David . |

They are both Tchokwe mid 20th century I would think. Here is an older version of your axe and a club similar in age to yours.

Thanks Lew,
do you know whether these axes are considered ceremonial ...or as weapons. Kind Regards David |
