sunday afternoon pade ...
 

Hello there,

This is one of my sunday afternoon finds .

I think its a pade from ceram but i,m not sure about that.
It look like there is some rattan windings missing on the handle , the rattan around the handle has a nice patin and there is also a verry light kind of red collor on the handle almost invisible.

The ''collar ring '' has a nice shape , has a little from a tsuba.

the blad is very thick it,s 1.5 cm . The lengt inc. handle is 75 cm.

Maybe that some one can tell me a little more ?

great sunday afternoon find. It's indeed what you think, a Pade from Ceram and a very nice one withal. It's very similar with the first one I have shown.
I think the collar is also from horn and the bindings as well the end cap from the handle are missing but this is not unsual. Very thick blade.
You can post some pics from the blade with more light?

Is there always an end cap at these kind of swords from origin?
So it is never the case that the hair, that probably once were there, is attached at the metal protrusion at the end, and just no end cap?

Hi Danny,

Are you sure windings are missing?

On my computer it looks like the ratan windings all have the same patin, but it could be the adjustment of the computerscreen.
And when they are missing, they are missing a long time ago, cause the patin is visible all over the windings?

BTW I love thick blades!

about the windings i meant on the top of the handle , when i see photo,s of other pade there is often some rattan on top of the handle.

The windings you refer to ,are still intact with a nice patin.

I will bring this one next time i come by for a coffee.

I am not 100% sure, but all old collected Pade I've seen have a end cap, look for example on page 70/71 van Z. (No. 261, 262 and 270) or the examples Michael show in the other thread. The example Royston show maybe don't have had a end cap. :shrug: :confused:

Ok, but when there used to be windings at the top of the handle, I think you should also notice this at the patin of the top of the handle? If the patin is all over the same colour, I think there either was never a kind of ratan winding, or it was gone very early!

Ok, it could be that once on each one were end caps. But most of the the one I have seen in collections or photos, have a missing end cap.
Also in the museums they are found without end caps. And also Michael has one without an end cap (the one to the right, with the MOP inlay);)

Maybe someone with old pictures can help by this quetion?

I know this is an older post, but WOW! That looks just like the sword I just posted about! I have never seen one like it online so far.

Hi Brian. This is what a search of our archives yielded from inputting "pade". It is not the most common of weapons, but there are more than a few of them around... :)
