Horn decorations?
5 Attachment(s)
A pair of tips / covers / protectors or just decorations.
When I bought them I was hoping that they may have been for elephant tusk but looking inside there appears to be traces of horn so I guess they are for bulls or buffaloes. Solid, thick brass weighing 360 and 380g each. Any ideas of origin and are they for decoration or protection? I have been searching the interweb and my old books but cannot find anything smilar. As usual all comments welcome. Regards Roy |
Ignoring the trace of horn inside I would guess at them being stirrup cups for drinking out of before the hunt, by hunt I mean horse hunt following the hounds after the fox.
Google stirrup cup and you might see where I am coming from. Regards Ken |
I see what you mean Ken, but these are much heavier and thicker than any stirrup cups that I have handled. Also the flaked off horn inside indicates that they have been attached to horns at some time.

Most likely for elephants' tusks when used in Indian weddings etc. With buffalo horn linings/thin padding so they fit securely.

Thanks Colin
That is what I was thinking of. Regards Roy |
