Bishop Museum in Honolulu??? There is a fantastic collection there! those shark teeth lined weapons would have made some gnarly lacerations.
Reminds me of the Hawai'ian Martial Art: Lua http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ypVoum_hOg |

HERE ARE A FEW PICTURES OF HAWAIIAN WEAPONS, NOTE THE LONG THRUSTING SPEARS ONE PICTURE IS OF THE BUTT END AND THE POINT OF AN EXAMPLE 12 FOOT 6.5 INCHES LONG. THE OTHER EXAMPLE IS 14 FOOT LONG AND WAS SAID TO HAVE BEEN FROM THE KAMAHAMEA PERIOD AND WAS CALLED NA POLOLU, ONE PIC OF MAN WITH SPEAR AND ONE PIC. OF TIP. SEE THE PICTURE OF KAMAHAMEA DRIVING THE FORCES OVER THE PALI ON OHAU, LONG SPEARS IN EVIDENCE. THE THROWING SPEARS I HAVE SEEN WERE SORT OF SHAPED LIKE TODAYS JAVALEN BUT ALL HEAVY WOOD PROBABLY FROM 7 TO 8 FEET LONG POINTED ON BOTH ENDS.
TWO SHORT HAWAIIAN CLUBS AND TWO WAR DAGGERS ONE WITH A HOLE THRU IT FOR A CORD SAID TO HAVE BEEN USED SOMETIMES AS A THROWING WEAPON USED IN WARFARE FROM CANOES? THERE IS A FORM OF SHORT CLUB USED ON LAND WITH A CORD ATTACHED (NOT PICTURED). IT IS FOR RETREVIAL AS WELL AS TO TANGLE UP OR TRIP UP AN OPPONENT I FORGET ITS NAME. SOME OF THESE WERE REFERRED TO AS A CLUB DAGGER AS IT HAD A SHARP END AS WELL AS A HEAVY STRIKING END. |
The tripping club is called a pikoi, and I get the impression that it was used as a meteor hammer, as well as a "slung shot."
I saw a brief section on a program a few years back, about the formations the Hawaiians used with their long spears. Has anyone seen any information on that? Best, F |
Was just at the Bishop a few months ago, it has one amazing collection.
If ever in Honolulu its a must see. |
great picture of the Battle of Na Pali, Vandoo! haven't seen that in a while.
ash is right. not only hawaiian, but some other stuff too.. |
