Well, this thread was already locked due to a horrifyingly unprofessional behavior of some ... moderators   . Now it is sold and the transgressors deservedly punished :D :D :D ( ah, nothing is better than a touch of schadenfreude!), we can discuss it.
http://cgi.ebay.com/TURKISH-OTTOMAN-...QQcmdZViewItem Who would pay $3,000 for it ? The name of the buyer ( ijustgottahavethat!) is quite revealing..... But then.... I've been just as impulsive too.... |
Ariel,
The certain moderators walked surely some days with a red color on their cheeks. To quote Bill, we all make mistakes so now and then. Lets show a little leniency! But one thing we cann't deny, LOL!!!! Thank you gentlemen for bringing some joy in our lives. |
I can totally understand paying that price!
When your life depends on having a good sword, it's nice to have the best.
And nowadays, you never know when you'll need it; a little tiff in the supermarket line, a little argument over politics, and you better have your two-hander ready... Although something shorter, like this very sword, might be better for 'indoor work'... specially when that rolling pin comes flying at your head! Yes, I collect; I've had the 'bug' for going on fifty years. I've often tried to explain it, and really can't. Perhaps it's the fascination with something that has had so much work put into it, both on the functional level and on the artistic level, not to mention the spiritual level. Any ideas? |
The collecting bug does not let up when the reasonable side of my brain talks about the money. I find the only good technique is to tell the collecting bug how many more swords I can buy for the same money if I am just patient.

A handsome and complete piece. Far too high to my mind, even at half that price would be quite high. However I am not sure I live in quite the same world.

Tim,
IMHO you're completely right. I've the same idea about it. The sport of collecting is to get so many possible nice items you really like against the lowest price possible. When reporting to the Mrs. it is better for your health you can tell her that it was a bargain. How would you manage when you have to tell her that you bought a beautiful sword but the rent for this month is a slight problem. Better not I guess but one way or the other she will find out   |
Persian Saying
In Persia they have a saying, "if you pay too much for something you will own it a long time".

If the pala had a blade with classical style grooves and a little gold koftgari i would consider the price very normal, but in this case surely expensive.
