PNG stone star club.

My latest toy. Beautifully carved and tactile stone star club. Pictures are poor due to fading light. The head was loose but on inspection there was the remains of some sort of waxy resin. I have resecured the head with my own wax resin which is slightly softer less brittle than what remained of the original masic which still felt waxy. Perhaps some brittleness comes with years? There is also a metal disc and nail like things in the end of the harft. The stone appears to be a hard stone {granite like} not basalt which the flat disc stone club heads are made of. The stone head could easily be old.

Wow, very interesting piece Tim.
Reminds me of the Incan war clubs. |
Very very neat! What's the size (length overall and the size of the head)? Thanks for sharing photos.

Thank you. I am very pleased with it. I have worked limestone, a soft stone with steel chisels. To carve this stone head from a granite stone without tungsten tipped granite chisels would have taken many days. The chances are that granite club heads might has been heirlooms. The total length is 35 inches and the star points are 7 inches from tip to tip.

Thanks for the measurements Tim, I like to try and get a feel for the scale of objects like this. Quite a big head then if it's that wide. While I don't have the experience you do working with stone, I can well understand your point about the difficulty in producing not just a usable head for the club, but one in a specific shape requiring a lot of material to be removed.
Very impressive, I can understand your fascination with these type of weapons, the dedication and time to produce them puts them in a league of their own. |
ITS A BEAUTY CONGRADULATIONS :D SEE THE POST ON KUKUKU CLUB THERE IS A PICTURE THERE OF TWO WARRIORS WITH CLUBS WITH SIMULAR HEAD FORMS.
