Hi! everyone
I'll be passing through Indonesia the next weeks. Mainly Singapore Jakarta and Bali. The trip in not long enough to visit other islands this time. Any advise about must see? keris related of course! best regards to all Cedric |

The National Museum of Jakarta

Unfortunately, this 21st-28th of March next week I would be out of Jakarta, to Basel, Barcelona and ... en France. But I would suggest you -- as I suggest to everyone who spends a couple of days in Jakarta -- to visit The National Museum of Jakarta (Museum Nasional) at Jalan (street) Merdeka Barat, Central Jakarta. Just take a ride by taxi from your hotel to the Museum, easy to find. There are quite a lot of thing to see, not only on kerises. But also, many kinds of precious collections of this 17th century Museum. In this location, there are two important places (1) the old museum, and (2) the new museum just beside the old one... In the old museum, please visit the 2nd floor, to the "Khasanah Emas" (gold treasury), and you will see quite a lot of Indonesian (Nusantara) kerises of the past. From Sabang in the west part, to Merauke in the very east part of this archipelago. In the new museum, please visit the 4th floor -- the "Khasanah Emas" too. You will see some precious and exotic collections of kerises and tombaks in a more convenient place than the old one... There is another museum to see, Museum Pusaka (Keris) -- at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah in Eastern Jakarta. But not as good as the National Museum... Bon voyage, mon ami... GANJAWULUNG |

Singapore
In Singapore, do visit the Asian Civilisation Museum @ Empress Place.
Not as many pieces compared to the collections at Jakarta, but there are quality pieces as well. A good shop to visit would be, Malay Art Gallery @ Bussorah Street (near the Sultan's Mosque). If you have time, I can arrange a meet up with local collectors.. :D |

Yes, once I stayed -- only three months, not in Paris but in Rheims in 1993. (I stayed in a French family who could not speak English almost even a word...). Once I was anxious to see "this" keris in Musee de L'Homme near Trocadero, Paris but unfortunately I didn't find it. This keris is the museum's collection, I found this picture from the catalogue. It pictured one of my favorite dhapur, "jalak sangu tumpeng" with very very cute warangka of elegant Solonese... (pls see picture below) GANJAWULUNG |

Dear Ganjawulung Thanks for the invitation; I'll email you my details in Jakarta. Regarding the Trocadero Musée de l'homme, it does not exist anymore. :shrug: The Collection has been mixed with the tribal art museum's and placed in the Quai Branly Museum. This last is a great museum but mostly turned on the tribal side, when keris are considered here more classical asian artefact. I succeeded in selling a few keris handle to them three years ago, but nothing ever since. I have also tried to make a big exhibition on keris with them but it doesn't progress... The Guimet Museum is more Asian oriented, but has only one keris. You find more keris and nicer one in private collections rather than in museum. But I have not said my last word.... In any case Paris museums are great and worth visiting. Anybody who needs tips or whatever on them can let me know Cedric |

Just to inform you about the National Museum of Jakarta, it is closed every Monday. So, if you want to go there next week, you should better go on Sunday morning, or other than Mondays. The museum usually closed at 2 pm, daily... I am still in Barcelona Spain. Hopefully be back to Jakarta on Saturday... GANJAWULUNG |
