Thai blade?

This one was bought in Thailand about 35 years ago....
Anyone who can help me with what it is? Just a tourist thing or? Any help at all should be much appreciated. Best, Stefan Sweden |
Stefan:
It is northern Thai work, probably Shan. These knives are used for ceremonial purposes, for example as a man's adornment for his wedding. The quality is largely in the amount of silver on the hilt and scabbard and the decoration of the silver. Generally, the blades are disappointing and probably not intended for use, although they are usually sharpened. The distribution of these knives seems to be fairly widespread in the region, including Thailand, neighboring areas of Burma, Laos and southern China. Your example is consistent with late 20th C. manufacture. Ian. |
