Sulawesi or Timorese Parang

Hello,

I acquired this sword in the bottom of a box I got at a deceased estate auction a few years ago. I have only ever seen one other like it (picture on google) through a Facebook post.

Has anyone else seen, or have similar examples that they may be able to post pictures of? I am trying to figure out exactly what condition this is in (good/bad/average) and how rare it may be, especially regarding its condition.
I am not interested in value, but I am interested in learning more about it and seeing other examples.

thank you
Steve

It is from Timor but not very old, mid to end of the 20th century would be my guess.

Thank you! Do you think that maybe it is some sort of tourist souvenir?

Hello Steve,
I doubt, I think that it could be a ceremonial sword for dances. On the lower Sunda Islands isn't much tourism.
Would need to see better pictures. How thick is the blade near the handle?
Regards,
Detlef

Thanks Sajen, I have not got the sword in front of me but the blade thickness at the handle is approximately 2.5 to 3mm thick. it is not very thick, I know, so I can see that it would be a very good possibility as a ceremonial sword. I can try take more pictures if you like.
