SHIELD RESTORED
The shield I put in a plastic box over it poured vinegar 9 degrees. Everyday you clean it with hot water from the sink with a plastic brush, then enter back into the tank with vinegar repeating this process for 7 days.In the last day after I removed the vinegar and I rinsed and cleaned with plastic brush, I rinse well .No is immediately as gloss metal. After a good drying I gave wire brush .After the treatment with vinegar were removed about 1mm layer of rust.Rust finding the bottom of the bowl with vinegar. Put vinegar to cover the shield. This process is not suitable for objects worn.Vinegar can attack some important details. The object is kept under control.

Looks like a new one!

Hi multumesc,
If you treat old metal with water, or water solution, water you use should be free of chlorine (destilled or boiled, at least). Otherwise, from the long time period point of view, it could be affected with inner corrosion (even after "relatively good" drying). Regards, Martin |
looks nice, It is Persian or Afghan. If you get better pictures of the text I could let you know what it says. There should be a marker to mark the begining of the text.

Salaams all..Please note ..that using hot vinegar is extremely dodgey... first it will take the paint off a door at 1000 yards !! and rip off rust like its not there... and if you slop it in your eyes ... well its a bit like battery acid. As already noted soapy water or perhaps coke-cola and continuous checking over short periods but please be advised on the agressive nature of hot vinegar!... I wouldn't normally comment much on cleaning methodology :) except to mention that it is the ethnographics we are after not the aesthetic or cosmetic technology...Though properly done it may be admired; you can't always put patina back.

Most of the weapons in history, were purchased in the bazaar. ;) My shield is old and original. The shield is not tourist. You've seen the pictures look like before restoration?Acid etching weapons (swords, halberds, shields, etc.) is many hundreds of years ago. ;) Anyway thank you very much for your opinion. :) But I am interested in more than what is written on it.Below is a picture from the 19th century that authentic military weapons (swords, shields) were sold in the bazaar in Syria. So how to translate text on the shield?Thank you. :)

Also, what acid-etched weapons you mentioned are hundreds years old? Have you considered 19th century revival acid-etched items comparing to your shield? What do you mean by "old and original"? Specifically, how old do you think this shield is and of what origin? |
