1132 - Philippine Bolo with Saber Type Hilt, Inscribed 31st Inf & 1918

Inscription have been made upon the blade of this bolo knife with a series of small punctuate impressions and read 'Philippino Bolo KNIFE' on one face and 'O.E.M. 1918 Co. H 31st INF' on the other. The relatively straight single edged blade with a dramatically clipped point and measuring just under 14 inches (35.5 cm) in length, has a slight recurve both along the overall convex cutting edge and along a flat back that tapers from 0.28 inch (0.7 cm) to 0.1 inch (0.25 cm) in thickness. The atypical hilt reminds more of a military saber hilt with long, heavy brass alloy end caps and wide ferrules flanking a central caribou horn grip wrapped with spirals of twisted brass wire and a flat strip; both set into grooves in the horn. The end of the hilt features stacked tang washers in a floral motif. The knife measures just under 20 inches (50.5 cm) and weighs 17.9 ounces (511 grams). A dark leather sheath is trimmed with lighter leather over red fabric. There is some cracking and flaking to the leather and evidence of either an old channel for a cord or lost insertion points for a strap on the back side of the mouth reinforcement. Overall sheathed length is just under 22 inches (56 cm) with a weight of 21¼ ounces (606 grams).
