1122 - Yemeni Jambiya with White Metal Decorated Dark Horn Hilt

This jambiya has a typical 7.6 inch (19.4 cm) long double edged curved blade with a fairly low relief rounded mid rib. The finish is plated and in good repair except for some light scuffing and some discoloration of the terminus of the mid-rib towards the tip. The possibility that this is one of those blades made of two stamped sheet metal halves cannot be excluded. Both sides of the dark buffalo horn hilt have been decorated: one face features white metal wires inserted on end into the horn and embossed medallions covering the rivets and the end of the hilt; the other face shows a partial plate of similar alloy covering the blade end of the hilt and embossed medallions around copper rivets. A stamped band with simulated granulation work of white metal runs around the blade end of the hilt. The dagger measures 11¾ inches (30 cm) in length and weighs 6.2 ounces (176 grams). The jambiya fits inside a wooden sheath covered with black leather. Sheathed, the dagger is 12½ inches (32 cm) in length and weighs just over 10 ounces (289 grams).
