1010 - African Hand Axe (Hatchet) with Christian Engraved Motif on Blade

This hand axe or hatchet measures 19½ inches (49.5 cm) along a dark wooden haft that then turns at an acute angle where a 4½ inch (11.5 cm) blade emerges. Engraved on each side of the blade is what appears to be a structure surmounted by a cross. There is an iron bolster where the blade emerges from the haft and an iron ferrule at the opposite end of the haft. Additionally there a blunt iron back edge opposite the blade and a lenticular overlay on each side where the haft is widest. The iron and wood have a nice patina and this item shows some honest age. Lew left no notes on this item but an experienced collector has kindly advised me that this is from the West African Fon Culture of Benin. The axe weighs 18 1/3 ounces (533 grams).
