This small dagger of the Shona people (Zimbabwe and South Africa) is distinguished by the intricate woven brass wire decoration covering most of the wooden hilt and sheath. A wooden loop arises on one side near the mouth of the sheath. The double-edged blade is just over 4½ inches in length and shows the typical African mastery of cross section as what looks like a darkened fuller is really a concave tapering to one edge. Lew dated this example as being circa 1900 to 1920. Overall sheathed length is almost exactly 8 inches with a weight of 2.4 ounces.
