185 - African Konda Tribe (Congo) Short Sword, Early 20th Century

This short sword has a 15½ inch (39.6 cm.) long iron blade with a 7½ inch (19 cm.) wide arching non-sharpened end and two 'backwards' tapering concave to straight cutting edges. On one face the edges and a distal panel into which a low midrib terminates have received a partial cleaning; on the opposite side the metal has been left dark. The panels either side of the midrib are stippled with short lines and four decorative holes in symmetrical array are present. Old damage is evident both with a torn area of edge, a few shallow edge cuts and waviness of both edges in the mid section. The pommel of the wooden handle appears to have had a wedge shaped piece broken out, but then reglued back into place somewhat imperfectly. The grip is wrapped with braided dark iron wire. Lew dated this to the first decades of the 20th century. Overall length is almost 19¾ inches (50 cm.) with a weight of 16½ ounces.
