98 - African Venda or Tsonga Stabbing Battleaxe, Late 19th Century

The well shaped and patinated wooden haft measures just over 19 inches in length with a widened carved head supporting the blade and an angulated expansion at the opposite far end. A very slight narrow lengthwise crack is seen at this end and appears to be old and stable. The tang of the blade extends through the widened head of the haft and turns upward to secure the blade. The age darkened iron blade has a low midrib on each face and is just over 15½ inches in length and offset just over an inch from the lengthwise parallel haft. Lew dated this example as circa 1870 - 1880s and attributed as Venda, though the form may also be seen among the Tsonga and Zulu. Overall weight is 20¾ ounces.
