76 - African Zulu Knobkerrie Club

A nicely patinated Zulu knobkerrie club with a burl grained head that is a little more onion shaped than truly spherical. A shallow depression is present at the end of the head opposite the integral shaft. Very slight imperfections are seen within the burl grain but no gross cracks are evident; a number of old, shallow scuffs and dings add character to the head. The shaft has a similar patina, becoming lighter in color at the end opposite the head. A small ring is scribed just over a half an inch from end and transects a stable appearing and shallow old crack running lengthwise from the end. Lew's notes date this example as circa 1880 to 1900. The club weighs 15½ ounces and is 25 inches in overall length with the head measuring 3¼ inches in diameter.
