68 - Philippine Bowie Knife with Leather Sheath, 20th Century

The single edged clip point blade is 7¼ inches (18.2 cm) in length and tapers from a maximum thickness of 0.185 inch (0.47 cm). The blade faces and back have been burnished bright with lengthwise scratches fading beyond the forte. The hilt is comprised of tan and brown horn with a central brass spacer and also a brass guard and an octagonal ferrule and cap. The knife measures 11½ inches (29.3 cm) in length and weighs 6.1 ounces (175 grams). Lew dated this knife to the 1940s - 50s, but this would be difficult to believe, so thoroughly has the knife been cleaned up, were it not for the perfectly fitting dark brown leather sheath that does show its age with some fraying in fringe at the tip, slight cracking and small cuts. The mouth of the sheath is reinforced with another layer of leather to which is attached a belt loop. Including a pair of leather tassels from the tip of the sheath, overall sheathed length is 16 inches (41 cm) with a weight of 8.4 ounces (240 grams).
