66 - Northern Philippine Talibon Knife with Wooden Hilt & Sheath, Mid 20th Century

This talibon knife or dagger is typical of this northern Philippine type from Christianized cultures. The 13 inches (33 cm) long single edged blade is flat on one side and rises to a low mid rib on the opposite side. arises from a short, narrow ricasso and widens to form a convex 'belly' opposite a much less curved concave back. Fairly heavy dark diagonal parallel scratches mark the blade faces and back and a few rust spots and patchy light pitting are present. The hilt is made of dark wood carved and shows a few small scratches. The knife measures just under 18½ inches (47 cm) and weighs 9.2 ounces (262 grams). A wooden sheath carved of the same dark wood is bound with rattan and also with (a later replacement) cord. The front half of the sheath includes the cutout for the blade, while the back is flat and thinner. The sheath has suffered a few chips and cracks, but remains fully serviceable. Overall sheathed length is 20 inches (50.7 cm) with a weight of 13.5 ounces (385 grams). Lew dated this example as 1940 to 1950.
