2 - Philippine Moro Punal or Gunong Dagger, c. 1940s

An 'everyday' version of a punal or gunong dagger, double edged with a fairly straight low midrib on either side; the forward cutting edge recurved being concave near the hilt and convex into the tip and the back edge similar but much less pronounced near the hilt. Thickness at the midrib about a third of the way from the hilt is just under 0.2 inch (0.48 cm) with the blade facets hollow ground (concave). The bright polish obscures all but a few traces of a laminated blade construction. There is a 0.16 inch (0.42 cm) crack perpendicular to the forward edge about two thirds of the way through the concavity from the guard in the first picture below; this is not seen on the opposite face. The guard, hilt ferrule and scabbard mounts are made of aluminum; traces of a now missing belt loop may be seen. Wood is exposed at the end of the scabbard and the tip of the blade is just palpable to the touch; whether this is intentional or and end plate has been lost in unclear. Overall sheathed length is 9½ inches (24 cm) and weight is 6.5 ounces (189 grams). The blade is just over 6 inches (15.7 cm) long with an overall dagger length of just under 9½ inches (24 cm). The dagger without sheath weighs about 5¼ ounces (152 grams).
