Hi Chregu,
I love it! These are a favourite of mine, they used to turn up on ebay quite regularly, but not so often now. It's Spanish, as you rightly say. Probobly made in the knife makng centre of Albacete. I have a similar one, as do others here, so hopeully they will join in to show you other examples. Yours is known as a 'Punal type A'. I would estimate its age as mid 19thC, but it could be as early as late 18th. A desirable item for sure. Here's a thread dealing with these and associated Spanish daggers/knives. http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...8&page=1&pp=30 Here is a great resource page for examples of the entire 'range' (including translation from French): Spanish Daggers The national knife of the canary Islands seems closely related, here are mine with some of them: Last edited by Atlantia; 23rd December 2010 at 07:13 PM. Hi Chregu,
VERY NICE selection. Here are my opinions on identification, from top to bottom (In my humble opinion of course) Do you have the sheaths for any of them? Knife from Canary Islands. Good quality inlay on hilt. date: late 19th/early 20thC (guess) Here is a thread discussing them. Warning: its also contains a disturbing image of the result of a knife fight. http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showthread.php?t=10312 Punal type B. Probobly made in Albacete. Classic design with brass insert in blade. Later 19th century. punal type B Corsican Knife of 'Vendetta' style. Difficult to date from your picture. I'd guess late 19thC. Try comparing with these Navaja Malagueña, or just possibly: Catalan knife (Ganivet). These are usually just called buy the generic name 'Navajas'. Date: 19thC. Please see the examples in the pages below to compare styles: Navaja Malagueña Catalan knives Have a great Xmas and a happy new year. Gene Last edited by Atlantia; 26th December 2010 at 03:16 PM. |
