Definately a barong. It has some of the features of an older blade in the handle, with sharply curved beak coming back almost parallel to the grip the crest a little longer and angles away from the handle instead of more perpendicular.
I have a similar blade shape (and it is thinner than my others) I've been told by several when i carried it down in Mindanao that it was from Palawan (island in Southern Philippines) |

Hola Carlos
Looks like you have a nice catch there! It looks like a barong to me, too. Am not sure however from which part of Moroland it would be coming from. Talking about barongs originating from southern Palawan (which as early as the time when Magellan landed in the Philippines (1521) up to now, are inhabited by Muslims), a fellow Filipino and a member of this forum sold me earlier two southern Palawan Moro barongs (photos below). They are not that old to be classified as antiques. Just the same, the make is of very good quality, and we may note that the blade is somewhat elongated, too. |

Great bargain, Carlos!
Looks like a 19th c. hilt to me. Please try to clean and etch the blade! Regards, Kai |

I've just made the relevant post in this old thread. On the first page of that thread, Dan also posted pics of another Palawan barong which you might want to check out ... |
