BEYOND THE CURRENTS: THE CULTURE AND POWER OF SULU
Following from the heads-up from our forum friend Nacho...
The exhibit details are as follows: BEYOND THE CURRENTS: THE CULTURE AND POWER OF SULU Cone Room and Dragon Gallery, Makati, Metro Manila, Philippines Ongoing until September 24 With power as its central message, Beyond the Currents: The Culture and Power of Sulu narrates the story of power wielded over European expansion in the lucrative China trading zone. The exhibit also presents the Sulu Sultanate's culture as the heart of a trade zone, market center, and regional power. Curated by a team led by Dr. Abraham Sakili and Ramon Villegas, Beyond the Currents showcases archival photographs, jewelry, textiles, and ritual objects from private collectors and museum partners. Rare suits of armor and weapons highlight the might of the Sultanate, which survived attempts at Spanish colonization for over 300 years Taken from this link: http://www.yuchengcomuseum.org/e-news.html#articles_1 |

I wish I were there. It would be interesting to see the regalia of the Sulu Sultanate, which was once very rich.

catalog
I have some items displayed in the Sulu exhibit. They don't have plans to print a catalog. I will follow up, though, their promise to take pictures and compile them in a disk. During the opening, we thought the pictures can be distributed to schools.
Students who have visited the exhibit are amazed with the high cultural achievement of the Sulu people. |

The book advertised in the website has been around for years. It was not made for this exhibit. I have a copy and it is a good book to have.
Nacho would be in a better position to provide us an update on the exhibit catalogue, brochure or any printed document, as I have not visited the exhibit myself. I am currently travelling in East Africa but will be in Manila in a couple of weeks and visit the museums. |

Sulu exhibit catalogs available
To RhysMichael, Battara, nacho, and everyone else who has posted on our Sulu exhibit,
We're glad to inform you that we've published a catalog for the exhibit "Beyond the Currents: The Culture and Power of Sulu" last September. The catalog presents, in a nutshell, the power and strength of the Sulu archipelago when it was the gateway to international trade between Europe and China. The 36-page book contains photographs and extended captions on selected Sulu weaponry, armor, and traditional arts. Also included are the September 20 lecture abstracts of Abraham Sakili, Ligaya Fernando-Amilbangsa, Julkipli Wadi, and Mehol Sadain on the history, culture, and dynamics of Sulu. The catalog is available for P450 at our lobby museum shop. For those who are in Manila, the museum is at RCBC Plaza, at the corner of Ayala and Senator Gil Puyat (better known as Buendia) Avenues, in Makati. For more details on the catalog or to order multiple copies, you may call us at (632) 889-1234 or e-mail us at info@yuchengcomuseum.org |
