Kampilan with Round Head and Mansala
Greetings,
This kampilan was taken off of eBay lot long ago. However I was able to save the pictures. The bands on the hilt look like iron and woven rattan. Around the pommel head there seems to be what may be a silver band. Also notice the red mandala. On the spine of the blade the seller said that there were inlaid circles (which I have problem seeing). Anyway this is a variant that for our records. Enjoy... |

IT'S ALWAYS GOOD TO SEE VARIATIONS OF FORM ON WEAPONS. WE HAVE SPECULATED THAT SOME POMMELS WERE EITHER DAMMAGED AND MODIFIED TO A DIFFERENT SHAPE OR THAT PERHAPS THE OWNER PREFERRED A NON TRADITIONAL FORM HANDLE FOR FIGHTING .
THIS FIRST EXAMPLE SHOWS THAT IT WAS DEFINITELY MADE AS WE NOW SEE IT. IF IT IS ORIGINAL TO THE BLADE AND IF ANOTHER FORM OF POMMEL MAY HAVE BEEN PRESENT BEFORE IS NOT POSSIBLE TO KNOW. A NICE EXAMPLE THE SECOND EXAMPLE APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN MADE IN ITS PRESENT FORM BUT IF IT IS ORIGINAL TO THE BLADE OR WHAT A EARLIER HANDLE MAY HAVE LOOKED LIKE IS ALSO UNKNOWN. |

I don't know if they say much more but here are some additional close ups of the hilt.
The blade is also quite nice with triangular brass dots. Michael |

In January 2005 Dan Wilke and I went shopping in Manila's antique district. (I'm the one wearing the jalapeno shirt and in need of barber!)
Dan (the good looking guy) bought this kampilan which had a bulbous pommel that seemed to have been made that way--no evidence of breakage or repair. If there had been a repair it was done a long time ago. The one I'm holding also had an abbreviated hilt but it had been broken and recarved in the past. Here is the thread where it was discussed previously and shows much better pictures: http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showthread.php?t=208 Last edited by Ian; 14th July 2014 at 09:17 PM. |

What a great hilt on Dan's hilt.
It reminds me a bit of this hilt (not as nice but a resembling form). Michael |

Ian, just so you know, i was over at Mang Ven's shop this past january. absolutely nothing to write home about: even he admits the supply over all is pretty much dried up. other than that, the place still looks the same tho...

Thanks Spunger. I haven't been back there for several years. Sorry to hear the supply has dried up. He had a good pipeline for many years.
Glad to hear Mr Ven is still going strong. He had some health issues a while back, but obviously not enough of a problem to keep him away from the shop. Michael, I really like that example you show. Definitely a similar style as Dan's hilt. Nice use of rattan on the handle. Ian |
