Tibetan sword
Dear all,
here is a sword i had the chance of acquire this year. I wanted to share it to you all. Here is a nice tibetan sword, probably from 19th, maybe earlier... Always tricky to date thoses... Iron fitting are carved and were gold gilded. Some traces remains. All stones here, tassel here. Blade is straight and sharp, in a nice polish state and with hairpin pattern. To my eyes, a jewel ! Come from a well know collection. If you have any other informations on that type of sword, i would be happy to hear them ! Have a good day, Julien |

Excellent!
Dating Tibetan swords is a bitch: they stayed the same for centuries. And those from the temples never “aged”. Currently, Tibet is kind of Shangri La, lost oasis of pacifism and contemplative wisdom. But for centuries it was aggressive and militaristic society. This image was changed by the current Dalai Lama, who wished to mobilize Western opinion against Chinese occupation. It was a brilliant public relations campaign. An interesting, although somewhat cynical view of that was presented by Lydia Aran “ Inventing Tibet”. Google it, it is a pretty short article. |
