Combination mace and tiller gun
This curious piece might, according to the person who sold it, be an original 17th century Indian mace.
I still wish to discuss it here though seeing as it reflects a tiller gun which, if not for the powderpan and hand guard, could have been European. In my eyes it reflects the same style as that of other samples we formely discussed. It is lacking a reinforcing ring or swamping at the barrel mouth though. Most tiller guns i have seen (in manuscript sources and real surviving pieces) do have such a reinforcing ring (cf threads). http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...ghlight=tiller http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...ghlight=tiller http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...ghlight=tiller http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...ghlight=tiller http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...ghlight=tiller http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...ghlight=tiller http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...ghlight=tiller http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...ghlight=tiller http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...ghlight=tiller The seller says this about it: "A very interesting North Indian Mace Gurj or Garz of solid iron with a fireable barrel forming the macehead. The iron shaft fitted with a simple but sturdy iron handguard with geometric chiselled decoration along the edges. The mace head formed from a short stout hollow iron barrel with a small firing pan to one side by a firing hole, remnants of gunpowder residue confirm that this weapon has been used many many times during its long lifetime. This is an early weapon and retains an attractive dark iron patination throughout, dating from between the 17th and 18th centuries. An individual and charismatic weapon. Indian maces are most commonly of the flanged western-style form, but occasionally veer off into combination weapons in a manner unique to the subcontinent. ind" My appologies for the unintended advertation of the website within the pictures, buttt i could edit those out. |
