Got this on a buy now. Should be able to be restored?

Hi Jose,

D'you think the grooves on the horns of the hilt once had silver wire in them ?
I'm intrigued by the shape of the hilt; have you ever seen this variation before ?

Btw, still looking for a decent container for the tulwar ..

The hilt needs to have the silver bands restored. The scabbard needs to have that ugly wire removed and replaced with a couple of silver bands.

After looking at the pictures carefully, I agree that the hilt had silver bands on it. Yes the wrap on the scabbard looks newer and that it probably had pierced or "pin pricked" silver design. I can do both if you are interested.

Rick as far as the hilt design is concerned, I would say that it is a similar idea to the same shape found on the top of Kalinga and other Igorot shields (though not related) in that the middle is the head and the other 2 "wings" are arms raised up.

I guess the carved in lines on the hilt threw me for a loop .

Rick I think those lines were scribed in order give the maker a point of reference to mount the bands? Here is one that Bill Marsh has for comparison.

I took a close look at the arms and there is darker patina in between some of the bands which indicates to me the former presence of silver bands (which give off a dark patina). At first guess, however, I thought that the lines were for silver wire. The scabbard is recent.
