Default Interesting Old Postcard

Here is an old postcard that I thought might be of interest to the forum members. Ive had this for about five years now and picked it and about ten others up at a small outdoor auction for less than the price of a beer. The armoury still exist to this day with little change. Hope you enjoy an for once the picture quality isn't my fault.

Very nice. I see a Baule sword at the bottom on the right which would be a perfect addition to my collection

Here are some other old postcards. These show the collection of the Museum of Central Africa in Tervuren (Belgium). Some of these displays can still be seen at that museum. A must if you're in Belgium and interested in Africa.

First a display case with some Kuba knives and other stuff

On this picture just look at the shields and spears on the wall !

Third pictues shows a statue of a Songye (Nsapo-nsapo) smith at work. On the wall are some Songye axes (I only have 2 )

AH!! YES THE THINGS THAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF

I LOVE THESE OLD STYLES OF MUSEUM DISPLAY IT TOOK A LOT OF TIME TO ARRANGE THEM ARTISTICALLY AND IDENTIFY THEM AND LABEL THEM ALL. THE ONES THAT HAVE BEEN ALLOWED TO STAY UP ARE THE ONLY ONES WE ARE LIKELY TO EVER SEE AS ONCE THEY ARE PACKED UP AND PUT IN STORAGE IT IS UNLIKELY ANY MUSEUM WILL EVER TAKE THE TIME, EXPENSE AND SPACE TO PUT UP SUCH DISPLAYS AGAIN.
USUALLY ALL THE INFORMATION THAT REMAINS IS THAT IT CAME FROM THE COLLECTION OF SO AND SO AND WAS DONATED TO THE MUSEUM ON SUCH AND SUCH DATE AND ASSIGNED A NUMBER. PERHAPS THERE IS DATA ON WHERE AND WHEN COLLECTED AND WHAT TRIBE OR BATTLE ECT. SOMETIMES ALL THAT IS KNOWN IS WHERE THE COLLECTOR SERVED IN GOVERNMENT OR MILITARY AND THE YEARS AND RANK AND IF LUCKY BATTLES HE WAS INVOLVED IN. WHILE SOME ITEMS MAY HAVE BEEN PERSONALLY COLLECTED MOST WERE USUALLY BOUGHT OR TRADED FOR FROM OTHERS OFTEN SEVERAL TIMES AFTER THE ONE WHO PICKED THE ITEM UP AT THE BATTLE ECT.

I GREW UP AROUND SOME OF THE OLD COLLECTORS LOCALLY AND REMEMBER THE STORYS AND INFORMATION THEY HAD IN THEIR HEADS AND SOME OF THE ADVENTURES ASSOCIATED WITH SOME ITEMS. JUST THINK OF THE STORYS AND INFORMATION NOW LOST FROM ALL THESE OLD COLLECTORS WHO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY AND MONEY TO AMASS THESE GREAT COLLECTIONS IN A TIME WHEN THEY WERE STILL BEING USED. SOME EVEN HAD THE ADVENTURES THEMSELVES HAVING PARTICIPATED IN BATTLES AND ACTUALLY SEEN THE WEAPONS IN USE BY THE TRIBES OR ARMYS.
