Default Nice Old Jambiya on Ebay

Hi All

This auction just ended. I seems to be a very nice quality jambiya. The silver work is real nice and the horn looks to be rhino. I have a similar one in my collection but the hilt material made me say lets take a chance on it.

Let me know what you think?

Default There's a very small...

patch of handle in picture 9 that does show some rhino-horn like characteristics. I suspect from seeing that that it is actually the very stuff.

I don't see any 'watered steel' though. Guess you'll have to etch it.

Nice piece! definitely 'real'! And when I say 'real' it's high praise.

You did good! envy is there.....

I can't wait to see the blade etched. If it's monosteel, I'll buy you a beer.

I have a couple similar to this. They have good blades. I think they are from Aden and the Lahej as I have seen the type in old photos from this area only. The scabbards look very Indian. I wanted this one too but was too busy.

Nice piece, definitely authentic. I dont think its watered steel though, some surface inactive rust which looks like watering. Still, a beautiful piece. A "Gambiya", as the Yemenis call them.

Is this a Yemen or Oman jambiya?

To me it looks like the hilt is definitely made of rhino horn. Nice puppy (woof ).

Definitely Yemeni, not Omani.

Hi All

The jambiya arrived today and it is definately rhino horn The dagger is quite solid and the blade is of excellent quality forged not stamped out. The silver work is top notch. This jambiya must date back to 1850s-70s. I will try to have the scabbard restored but if not I have a friend that visits his family once a year in Yemen and will ask him to have one made up for me. Here are a couple of photos of the jambiya. Another photo to my other one for comparison. The bottom one I picked up from Artzi's table a couple of years ago. Both are of exception quality.
