Peurise nilo (leather shield from Aceh, Indonesia)
I just won this shield on an auction.
In a glimpse, I saw today or yesterday a thread (removed in the meantime because the auction was still open???) about this particular shield, doubting the authenticity. I am very interested in the opinions of the forumites. I hope to have it in my hands in a week or so. |

Hello Albert,
I've seen this shield as well and followed the auction. A friend told me that the seller (from Germany) is a little bit dubious, he should has sold for example toli-toli as antique/old which have been self made and recent. I really hope that you will find when you have it in your hands that it is original. I cross my fingers! Best regards, Detlef |

Hello ALbert,
For the sake of discussion. The stars. All stars on peurises I have seen where casted. These look like sheet metal, cut / sawn / the edges bended backwards. Are there any old examples with such stars in, for example, the collection of Leiden RMV ? Best regards, Willem |

Good evening,
Maybe it is interesting to quote the text of the auction. This of course without prejudice. No comments on the seller or buyer are intended , solely the text of the auction, combined with pictures posted above, for the forumite to draw his own conclusion. "Caveat Emptor" quote... Peurise shield – Aceh – Indonesia – Late 19th / early 20th century In good condition Beautiful Peurise made of layered buffalo leather and brass fittings, with braided rattan wire at the sides. The inside of the shield contains the original handle and cushion. The stars on the shield are lined with leather and set with brass fittings (see photos). Apart from the braided reed shields and cast-metal shields, shields of leather were also used in times of scarcity. These were made of leather of the buffalo, elephant and even hippopotamus. This shield is made of water buffalo leather so is not in violation of the CITES regulations. Shield is slightly flexible and slightly deformed, otherwise in good condition. Does of course have signs of wear and there is a minor dent in one of the stars. Size/diameter of the shield is: 27 cm ....unquote |

In the meantime, I received the shield.
It indeed, as judged by several forumites, appears to be a recently made one. It looks nice, but it is not traditionally made and the materials used are not the ones that would be used a hundred years ago. Fortunately, the seller agreed to take the shield back. |
