Default Shin gunto question

The VOC pendant from my previous thread came together with this shin gunto type 98. It has had a visibly tough life. It is signed under the handle, but no matter how hard I try, I can't figure out which blacksmith this is or when the blade was made. Anyone have any idea if this is a war production or if it's an older blade?

Thanks!

I'm not sure what I can see, but the engravings are "choppy" which for me places the age no earlier than the 1930's. A true shin gunto.
