Oriental Picnic ? box set
Hello everybody,
I got this box, 20 cm diameter and pretty heavy ( 2kg ) only for ''the box'', it was sold as an oriental picnic box set, do you think it was made for that ? I found it nice, maybe turkish-ottoman or north african ? Maybe somebody recognise the pattern Don't seems antique but not too recent (more deep patina in reality than what seems in the pictures ) What do you think ? Kind regards |

Early to middle tinned copper 20th c Indian betel box for betel nut goods, nuts leaves spices etc, not a picnic basket...It would be accompanied by a nut cutter and a crusher and other tools. The white powder on the tool is lime, used in preparing the chew. Cutters were often decorated, I've even seen a gold handled upper class Mughal one.
More than most of you want to know: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcUFAu7D6QU It also turns user's teeth red & can cause mouth cancer. Last edited by kronckew; 29th May 2020 at 08:40 AM. |

Hello,
Really Thank's a lot !!! You fix it !! When I saw all the white powder, I didn't know what it was: hesitating between cleaning powder ( like baking soda ) or other chemical stuff ... Really nice the ciseled models Kind regards |
