Dayak parang ilang (mandau) for comments
Hi
I just bought my first mandau...what do you think? It should not be too old and is not very large, quite small grip...but in good shape this type of Mandau was used for? All comments and help with identification are welcome! Best regards |

WHILE YOUR EXAMPLE IS NOT OLD, IT APPEARS TO BE MADE IN THE TRADITIONAL WAY FOR USE, VERSUS FOR CEREMONY OR PRESENTATION OR TOURIST SALE.
THIS WAS LIKELY MADE FOR USE IN DAYAK VILLAGES, MOSTLY FOR WORK BUT WOULD SERVE AS A GOOD WEAPON IF NEEDED. TO MY KNOWLEGE THERE IS LITTLE NEED OF IT AS A WEAPON IN BORNEO THESE DAYS. I DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT TODAYS DAYAK CULTURE AND DIDN'T GET A CHANCE TO VISIT TRADITIONAL VILLAGES UP THE RIVERS WHERE THE LONGHOUSE VILLAGES STILL EXHIST. I SUSPECT THE LOCALS MAY HAVE SUCH A MANDAU AS YOURS EITHER FOR A TRADITIONAL SIGN OF MANHOOD AND FOR TRIBAL CEREMONIES OR PERHAPS FOR A JUNGLE WORK KNIFE. IF THE FAMILY HAS ENOUGH MONEY PERHAPS THEY HAVE MORE CRUDE JUNGLE KNIVES FOR NORMAL DAILY WORK. IF ANY MEMBERS HAVE VISITED AN ACTUAL DAYAK VILLAGE (NOT A TOURIST ONE) PERHAPS THEY CAN ANSWER AND CONFIRM MY GUESS OR CORRECT ANY WRONG CONCLUSIONS. |
