A very curvacious Salawar Yataghan / Khyber Knife
A heavily curved piece.
Length 24" with a 19" T-section blade Pommel is two-piece horn. A mechanical type of pattern. I cannot determine if etched or engraved, but I think the latter. The first, hastily taken photo shows the degree of curvature compared with a more typical weapon. Any ideas where this would have come from ? Regards Roy |

It almost looks like a larger version of a Kerala knife.

For starters, what a lovely, elegant blade!
Lots of interesting things going on here. The curvature of the blade and its pattern welded or 'faux'(looks etched or engraved to me) pattern welded construction are just two. The hilt looks eastern European or even is more Trabzon-ish to me. The bolster looks quite Afghan though. I suggest there may be a possibility that this salawar yat may not be Afghan at all. Just a thought based on the unique blade and hilt. Fine, and fascinating piece, regardless! |
