Malay parang (?)
Looks Malay to me, maybe Sumatran. When I first saw this one I thought it was a recent version of a parang pattani that DAHenkel provided great information about on the old Forum.

It's a Sumatran klewang, Ian, and the nicest of the three with an upswept wide blade that I've seen so far by a long stretch.
This one has an unusually heavy blade and that uniqe tip, making it really sweet. The "horse foot" hilt end is almost always a sign of a Sumatran piece, to the best of my knowledge. Congratulations to the winner of a great piece, in my opinion. Here are pics of the other two, both vastly inferior to this one.....I'd found an ID of klewang jenguk for the first one somewhere, but truly can't remember where, and it's similar in shape plus had a blade treatment on the end. The second has the wierd "guard" incorporated into the blade where it meets the hilt, with the end curved inwards. All three seem to have variations on the "horsefoot" pomel. I didn't win it. Don't know if the winner is a member here or not.
Should have figured Sumatran, as the hilt is similar to the only Sumatran piece I have. Certainly unique and beautiful. Steve |

Mike:
I think you will remember this thread on the old Forum, http://www.vikingsword.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000598.html and the great pictures posted by DAHenkel of parang pattani. What strikes me about the sword that is the original subject of this thread is the curious "curl" on the back edge and the flamboyant "clip" to the blade. Those features are why I thought it looked like a parang pattani. On going back to Dave's original post, I was struck by the similarity to his first sword, which is definitely in the style of a klewang as you note for the example above. The hilt on the example at the top of this thread could be Sumatran, as you say, but some pattani hilts are very similar. Ian. |

Excellent memory Ian, and I stand corrected....you may well be absolutely correct.
As you can tell, I love the blade shape and when Justin and I ran across it on Ebay we both stopped dead.....I wonder just how many of us bid on this piece? **grin** Mike |
