interesting Katar for comment
Just won this interesting katar with a stylish hilt. Blade is either wootz or pattern welded steel.

That is unusual, I would have thought the wielder's grip would be prone to slipping since there's just one crossbar.
I look forward to seeing some more detailed photos when it arrives! |

I was being lazy so I went to the books.........as Ariel notes these shaped bar hilt katars are known as 'garsoe jamadhar' (Pant, 1980, #415,416). Pant insists that the term jamadhar is the correct term for 'katar' and that Egerton transposed the term.
Apparantly these are from regions in Bhuj, Gujerat and Sind. Seems unusual to see wootz on these to me at least, but as noted Jens will know far more as these have been his field of study for many years. I just wanted to add a little perspective to this nice example beyond the katar classification. I wonder what the meaning of the garsoe term might be, hopefully some input on that will be entered. |

Hi Lew,
It's an interesting katar/jamdahar you got. Ariel and Jim are of course right both when it comes to the name and the place of origin. If the blade is of wootz, it would not surprise me if the rest of the katar is as well. Nice find congratulations . Jens |
