Well, this is Maranao, mid to late 1800s, and perhaps ceremonial. Well preserved. Once had an iron or brass/bronze guard.

Hi Danny,
Very nice piece! Whats the round inset in the handle? Is it a coin?

I don't know much about this type of sword, but I do like coins.
Can you get a closeup of the coin?

Danny
According to Cato, most of these with hair were used for ceremonial purposes.

Danny, nice kampilan! Thanks for sharing the photos.

Battara, I realize that discerning the features of a kampilan can be tricky ... i.e., for a beginner like moi

Yet on the other hand for somebody who's been at this for some time ... i.e., yourself the subtle features can easily be recognized.

Would you mind further sharing your thoughts on how the kampilan may have truly been a Maranao piece?

Thanks in advance!

Ok, well, here are 2 things that tell me it is Maranao:

a) the style of okir used is Maranao

b) the type of pommel form is Maranao (as opposed to that used in Borneo)
