Mongolian Sword
The auction has ended and the item is free for discussion.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...#ht_9980wt_915 What do you think? I have some doubts, especially re. "oriental" letters and the claim that greedy Europeans wanted imported silver items to be hallmarked in the European style, but.... somebody will have correct info ( I hope). These wild Mongols were surely attracted to the most kitschy stuff and the colors of this sword would make a San Francisco bathhouse sober in comparison. I can just imagine Subedei Bahadur wielding this one at the battle of Kalka! Russians must lost the nerve immediately... On the other hand, I might be totally wrong and ignorant; this might be a superb and unique sword. Please enlighten me. |

Hmmm
Hi Ariel, I cannot help with this dating, kind of seems brand new to me but I have some swords circa 1900-1910 in pristene condition too.
I can can say this is the third such item I have seen like this. They were not as loud and bright as this one but the did fetch 2 and 3 times the amount this one did, one of them even had the blade scabbard bound with corrosion. I wouldn't mind finding a box full of them. Gav |

Too short for a cavalryman. I think mongols appreciated good business-like weapons. I donīt have much experience in the San Francisco bath houses, but somehow I donīt believe this kind of work is representative of the mongols. Looks like a tourist model.

thisd item is modern made for sure !!!.
lok at the blade and handle, and the fact the decoration is enamel ! sure the mongols, up untill recently, bat is before the comming of communisim. had such swords, normaly with gold and jade handles and fancy multifullerd blades and such, but these were not for use as weapons , they were items of dress for the rich and items used in religious practices.. this one is very very modern indeed. the traditional styles of mongol sword used in recent times.. 1500- now are quite different in style, |
