Default Hello All Help Please

Hello all,
I am new to the forum. I have a small collection going that I hope one day, to be a very nice collection in size and quality. I am very picky.
I have come across three items in which I can not figure out. I know what they are of course, but have no history, what part of the world they are from, what date could be on them..... Boggled. I will post some pics here shortly to see if you all can come up with anything on them?
I will attempt to get the best and most detailed pictures, but I will be working with a cell phone, and do not have much faith in the quality of the pictures.
I hope to speak with you all soon.

welcome aboard. cell phone pics can be OK, best taken outdoors in sunlight & shoot the picture like a sniper rifle. of course, there are some rifles no one can hit the broad side of a barn with. then spray & pray. you might get lucky.

Sounds like I found another Soldier on here. Thank you for the welcome. I will attempt to take a few later in the morning. If the sun will cooperate. I sure hope someone can help with them. They are very nice in good condition.

naw, just an ancient mariner, 5 years active & 7 reserve in the USCG. i was in a law enforcement MOS & had to qualify on the range every 3 mo. justincase we stumbled on some baddies. i also burned a lot of powder on the 1000 yd. range in Kodiak, paper targets luckily didn't shoot back. the local wildlife kept you on your toes tho. (leaving the range one snowy day, i found i'd been stalked by a kodiak bear on the way in. - i reloaded my rifle - a scoped .300 win. magnum - & was real careful walking back to my car. i was there when the navy turned base kodiak over to the coast guard, one of the departing marines told me a tale about one night when the OOD did not get his scheduled call from the guard post halfway in to the town. he drove out & found the guard house deserted with two mags worth of .45 acp casings scattered around it. he found the two marines, sadly dead, about 50 yards away where a kodiak bear had dragged them. they found the bear about another 50 yds. on, with two mags worth of .45 slugs in it. my ship (i was the engineering officer), the USCGC Confidence (WMEC-619) was moored across a narrow bay from a flat-topped mountain, we'd see the occasional bear wandering on the mountain a few hundred yards away (and rather near the base buildings).

anyway, noting your avatar, i thought my spiel would be more effective in military terminology.

Hello,

I think, all the items are from Africa. I see two shields and two spears.

Here is a link to one of the shields, which i identify as a shield: http://www.flight-toys.com/artifacts/tb01.html and another one with african items: https://www.flickr.com/photos/41048903@N03/page1 (Page 3)

The items seems to be old, but it is hard to judge, because africans are very skillful specialists in artificially aging.

Kind regards Roland

Cool

Hello, your spears looks like Danakil/Somali from horn of Africa.
I think the pictures are so small to see it well, so about the age - difficult to tell.

Hi,
I can see one shield. As you already found out, it is classical Abyssinian gasha - shield. This is original one. To make fake Ethiopian shields of leather is not as easy as e.g. wooden masks from West Africa and other woodem staff. The spears are, I think, of Somali style. But could be from Ethiopia (e.g. Ogaden), too.

I know they are not fakes. My great grandfather and grandfather traveled all over the world during their years in the military and have passed down to me, collectibles from years dated as early as the 1800's. All have been identified as authentic. No fakes in any of the items all originals.
I really appreciate the help with these items. If you come across anyone who may know more, please direct them my way. I cant tell you how much I appreciate your help and your knowledge.

Martin,
Thank you so much for you knowledge on these items. I really appreciate you taking the time to comment on this. This will def help me do the research to find the value of these items. I have to put them in my insurance policy at the house in case something happens. I really appreciate it!!!

I am going to attempt to put some larger pictures of the spears in this message. The shields are actually just one shield. I took pictures of both sides of it but I see it is in a couple of pictures. But it is only one shield.
