Three Weapons that are unknown to me.
Hi all,
An older gentleman came into a gunshow I was set up at and brought these in for ID. Being I have messed with edged weapons for 40 + years I ended up looking at them for him and correcting him on one. He said his long gone uncle was a geologist for an oil company 40-50 years ago. He said they were all from S. America. I told him that one was a Keris from the island but did not know what the others werre for sure. Here are some bad pictures of them. 1st two. Any help would be appreciated. Terry |

Looks like a nice Madura keris with typical ivory handle (donoriko type)

Hi Terry. Welcome to the forum. And you are right, those are pretty bad pictures.
Better photos and, of course, photos of the blade are really essential for any kind of accurate identification. What i can tell you is that the dress for this keris (the hilt and sheath) are from the island of Madura. The hilt looks like it is probably ivory (though bone is possible) in a form known as "Donoriko". You will find other examples of this style along with many others on this thread. http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...ura+keris+hilt. The sheath is the Madurese form of a "Ladrang" style which is what is used for formal wear. Other than that there is not much that can be told. There seems to be a bit of wear and i could hazard a guess at late 19th to early 20th century, but that is just a guess based on bad photos and no look at the blade. |

Well, your new photos pretty much confirm for me that this hilt is ivory and very nicely carved. All other previous comments still stand. If you still have access to this keris it would be very helpful to see images of the blade. No matter how ornate aspects of dress might be in some cases it is the blade that is at the heart of any keris ensemble.

I will be going back to the gun show this week end and hope the man comes back in but there is no guarantee. Here are some pics of the others. Thanks for the comments.

Terry, i cleared your post without seeing the photos you attached. We keep three different forums going here, the keris forum where we only discuss keris related subjects, the European Forum for items from that region and the main ethnographic forum where this last blade belongs. Please post it there if you want commentary. Thanks.

Terry, this one isn't pertinent to keris either and should be given its own thread in the regular Ethno Forum for response.

I assume that you are referring to the Madurese kris from Terry shown on the first pictures? Are you able to determine that a blade or pamor has magical powers without even seeing it? Please tell us how do you determine it because we all dream to have this capability! Regards |
