skean dubh
been looking for an older skean dubh with a carbon steel blade, not one of the modern stainless ones with the phony plastic wood grip and plastic 'jewel' that predominate. found this one billed just as an antique scottish dirk (skean du) with a wood handle.
the 'wood' is in fact stag, there is a brass guard and pommel plate. the carbon steel blade is file worked and 4 in. x 7/8 in. at the guard. the stag grip is 3.5 in. there were a couple of small rust spots that have cleaned off with little effort. the leather sheath is seamed down the back & in good condition. i've posted my other scottish one before, which is a bit bigger & not really a sock knife. maybe a sgian achlais? (lower one) upper dirk made from what appears to be a backsword tip. Last edited by kronckew; 26th April 2008 at 01:56 PM. |

This one is also recent. Older ones in stag kept the roughness of the stag and did not use brass in this way. It is nice, but recent.
