MORO KAMPILAN
Hello friends,
Sharing one of father's 5 kampilans. Purchased it from a collector in Cotabato. Enjoy, Yves |

This might be Maguindanao. There was once an okir eye and perhaps even some okir silver on top of the hilt as well.
Also on the tip back, the frets look like those on the back of a kris. Not seen this form before. Nice to have a whole and complete scabbard! |

What are the dimensions of this Kampilan; blade, hilt and overall length?
I've never seen repoussé eyes and okir in a plate that is nailed to the handle before, yet there are no carved details on the handle. I get the impression that this is pretty new. |

Actually Rick using small nails for attaching silver plates were in use for a couple of centuries. Repoussed silver plates are also old. And based on the okir, I believe this to be Maguindanao also.
Here is my silver covered kampilan where all of the silver and silver alloy repoussed plates are attached by small nails: http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...ilver+kampilan |

Also I didn't know that there were brass/bronze inlaid dots under the blade frets near the tip. I enhanced the picture as best I could:

Also a good etch would bring out the blade patterns.
Nice touch on the dots. |

Although this is a smaller blade, I would place this piece around the late 1800s - 1900.

Hello Yves,
I agree with Jose that the hilt may be from around the turn of the 19th century, the blade might well be somewhat older - max. thickness? Regards, Kai Last edited by kai; 23rd August 2020 at 10:28 PM. |
