Default Madura handle

A recent finding this ivory JANGGELAN handle from Madura. There are a few flaws like the faceless head in the foliage and a few missing chips but overall in excellent condition. Is anybody able to give a clue about the Arab text?

Very nice handle! It's my favorite Madura handle, look here: http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...ight=janggelan

Sorry, can't help by the translation.

Best regards,
Detlef

Although I can't translate, I think it is Qu'ranic verse - I see the word "Allah" in the middle of it.

What material is this?

Hello Klungkung,

I have posted the picture of the script in the main forum since I think that the possibility will be better there to get an answer.

Regards,
Detlef

Thanks for the interesting tread and bringing it to the attention of more members.
The material is as quoted from ivory, possibly 'gading' so elephant. The cracks may indicate it.

You're welcome!
I think that the handle material is whale tooth, see the link I have given in up, three of my handle seems to be from the same material!

Detlef
