ethiopian Gurade sword / interesting blade
Hello,
I would like to show you the gurade sword I just received, for comment and for share please. Here are the pictures of the seller, seems old , or just bad preserved the hilt is made of three pieces of horn I suspected, not wood , central part can be rhino I guess. It was taken back from ethiopia in 1969 The blade is all rusty and doesn't seem european, a local production or indian/persian ? I'm cleaning it '' a little'', I post other pics ... Kind regards |

cleaned...
an engraved sun on each side of the blade ( ethiopian work !?! ), and two fullers, a local made blade ?? under the rust we can see a bad rough sharpening , It's not my work... for the hilt, I'm sure that central part of the hilt is rhino, ,maybe the two others too. the final pommel cup is made of brass, wasn't sure because it turned brown/black when I received it. The scabbard fits good but maybe more recent work ?? What do you think ? Kind regards |

The grip looks nothing like the before photos other than being three parts, well done!
The grinding marks on the blade can be removed with stoning using a soft coarse stone that disintegrates quickly. I have white ones that do a great job and quickly conform to the blade shape which is good for following the edge. Once stoned you will not see the grind marks, keeps the contour and blends in nicely. |

Thank you Will for your message !
I have coarse stones ( 600 and 1000 ) and will try to remove it when I'll have some free time I find the blade has a shamshir shape , european blades are usually thicker or larger near the tip like hussard swords... but didn't saw shamshir with double fullers... Local made blade ? Indo persian blade with llater local made fullers witn the sun engravings ?... |
