Keris Salayer ?
Dear members ,
I would like to get your opinions for this keris . Different possibilities and very confusing . The blade fit perfectly into the sheath so looks like both originals . Some say that could be Salayer on South Celebes ( hilt and blade shape without pamor ) , some Malaysian or Sumatran for the sheath half moon and the the inlaid blade other West coast of Borneo for the hilt ... Hi Henri, interesting ensemble you've got there. The hilt is uniquely Salayar, "Pangulu Le'ngo" (le'nga) form, as it's called by the locals. The interesting keris blade, I cannot confirm. The hilt cup (pendokok, kili-kili) is Sumatran. The sari bulan sheath, may be Sumatran or Peninsular Malay to me. Overall a nice find, congrats!

Lovely keris Henri.
The hilt is indeed very salayer. But how would a salayer blade look like. is there a specific salayer blade style ? Best regards, Willem |

Nice grab for sure - congrats, Henri!
IMHO, the blade also seems to have a Straits feel to it. My best guess would be that this is a Sumatran/Straits keris that found its way into the hands of a Salayer/Selayer owner who decided to rehilt it according to local fashion. The pesi is weird though - has anyone disassembled a Selayer badik or two? Regards, Kai |

Thank you all for your inputs .
Kai is really close to my initial thoughts : a sumatran keris brought back to Salayer and re hilted according local fashion . Regarding the hilt : cleaning is on the way but I removed the blade from the " juice " to take some photos of the pesi . Surprisingly a piece of metal was welded to the original ( to strengthen or to match the hilt ?) .... with an unsual goldish alloy ???? Never seen such metal used for welding ..... Henri |

I think that the pesi was broken and someone repaired it like this and hard-solder a second piece of iron to the original pesi to aggravate it. Just MHO.

Hello Henri,
This repair job to strengthen the remaining pesi explains the slightly offset tang position. I doubt that this is Indonesian work though - possibly some European attempt at a pesi repair? We could use Alan's insight, I guess! Regards, Kai |

The pesi looks strange so you better keep the hilt on.
What fascinated me about it was the four petal flower which I haven't seen before on this kind of hilt. My keris hilt has leaves but the hilts on the badek doesn't. Michael |
