Default stone axe

Hi

A picker i buy from with sent me these pictures of a stone axe he came across.

we are in lock down for awhile so i will not be able to see item in hand.

It looks from the patina on the handle to have some age to it
the stone head seems to have metal bands to stop the stone cutting into the haft of the handle (I have photo shopped some red lines to indicate what i am referring to)

any idea of origin, age and originality of the item

Outside my normal area of interest but the drug of acquiring new items is driving me to purchase things so i have new toys to examine after lock down

regards to all and i hope you are all doing as well as expected

Ken

Hi
I never saw a stone axe with metal barbecue bands.
Are you sure that's a stone axe and not an iron axe?
And if it's stone, which kind of stone, can you give us close photos later?
It looks very flat for a stone...

Very best

What awful pictures and background to make judgement on this piece. A stòne axe is pretty much of the same form the world over. One would tend to assume this sort thing most likely to be from PNG or there about. However the absence of the most common materials at hand, plant fibre bindings and the cord based technology of PNG. I dare to say that this piece could be from South America. If you explore and search the AMNH data base. You might see the possibility of a South American origin.

Thanks Guys

Well i have purchased the item so we will see what turns up
price was minimal enough and I need new things to keep me sane.

(The seller is a delivery van driver so he might be out my way sooner than lock down in Ireland is over, just under 2 weeks to go but you never know really)

The background does not help in determination of what we have to be sure.

The Platina on the handle looks old the seller says it is a slate blade so we will see.

The metal to stop the stone cutting int the wood is the part that is throwing me out.
I have no stone weapons as yet so I taught i might as well get this one while it is available.

Regards to all and i hope you are doing well

Ken

Let us know. The stone does not appear to be of any configuration I have seen.
