Movie the Wizard of Bagdad 1960
"The Wizard of Bagdad" 1960
Sadly, I just saw 20 or so swords destroyed in the filming of this movie. The man character had what looked like a rather nice serviceable shamshir with kilij mounting..horn and all. I would think that at the time of filming it was far cheaper to use the real thing than have copies made. No doubt some were made by the prop department, but not most. Hi Ric,
On the subject of 'props', there were a number of 'boys historical adventures' made for television during the fifties here in the U.K. that used the real thing rather than props. The Adventures of William Tell was one that had an fair amount of Third Reich 'Holbien' daggers for the characters and in another The Adventures of Sir Lancelot a number of 'knights' were equipped with, I'm sure, genuine Indo Persian helmets. I am aware that there was a time, when, if you searched the stores of the prop suppliers you could find the genuine article alongside the fake if you knew what you were looking for. I'm betting that these 'real props' are long gone now, must have been an Aladdin's cave at one time. My Regards, Norman. |

There is a "prop" that survived. I have an all steel inlaid Indian spear that was decommissioned from the Metropolitan Opera New York in the 1920s.
The point has been slightly blunted, otherwise in great condition. http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...t=indian+spear |
