Langgai tinggang
An very rare find this Langgai tingggang it comes with an utility knife not the normal pisa raout we normally see with the Parang Ilang .
The Handle has nice scroll and leech designs and headtrophy spirit the area is Saribas . The longest tail feather of a rhinoceros Hornbill is represented by the groove on the blade . Also the metal bands indicate that this one is from the north part off Sarawak. The scabbard on the front is heavy black/red hard wood . Nice carrying band . Indication off age is first part off the 19 centh. Ben Last edited by Dajak; 7th December 2008 at 07:01 AM. |

Wow Ben,
That is a rare find! Did you grab it out of a museum at night when nobodys there? (Well in Bronbeek I didn,t see such nice piece as you have). I also like the shape of the scabbard. Never have seen such with that round looking shape which holds the sharp edge of the blade when it,s in the scabbard. Also the attractive handle is one of the book! Can you please post some pics of the handle from the side and back? I,m looking forward to hold it once! (or twice, or more often). Regards, Maurice |

Hi Maurice even pieces like this are hard to find in museums .
It comes from an Dutch collection I have still to ask the history about it, will let you know when you come over here to visit me . I did get some very rare items from Borneo you will be surprised . this is the typical Iban Handle that you can find in Saribas . If you see this one in real you will be surprised from the heavy blade and that it looks better than I get it on the pics . Ben |

A true beauty!
The scabbard is indeed unusual for a LT. Usually they are much more plain, if they have a scabbard left at all. Unusually cubistic head on the handle too as well as the unorthodox (for a LT) protrusions on the top of the tip. A very interesting and rare version of the already rare LT-parang - congratulations! Here are the 2 other variations of krowit that could be seen on a LT.
I haven't seen any other variations than these 3 but maybe someone else has? Michael |

Ben, thanks for the additional pics. I really like those handles. I myself have two of those handles with headfigures. (unfortunately not on a langgai tinggang).

Hi Ben,
Here are the blades. But it was the krowit variations that were interesting. Also my latest LT with the sellers e-Bay pictures. The krowit variation is the same as Ben's but the blade isn't as nice as his. The hilt however is quite unusual. I think it's old style West Kalimantan Iban. Michael |

The wire on the handle looks like zinc and copper? or is it a type of rattan?

Hi Michael the first 2 pieces are missing the fat metal below the handle that
we mostly see on the L T the one you will get has the metal below the Handle . Are the 2 first ones have heavy blade's ?? It looks that those 2 are more an variation between the parang niabor / L T can you send close upp pics off the handle s . Ben |

Hi Ben.
I already have the last one but I haven't had time to take my own pictures of it. The "missing" fat metal is common but not something that always is there. The LT in the museum of Nijmegen for instance doesn't have it either. That one also has a triangular crowit resembling my first (and the one pictured in Iban Art). All of them have thick shoulders and are quite heavy, but well balanced. It's interesting that the one described in Shelford doesn't seem to have the crowit we usually associate with a LT? There seems to be quite a variation of features on the LT, like the Ilang. On the best one I have seen so far the crowit stands out even more than your other one (the one that I owned for some years) and the blade is heavy decorated. Michael |

the area has maybe something to do with it but the first handle is for sure Saribas area . Shelford says about the lT that it is practically the same as the niabor with the handle of an parang Ilang . And the niabor has the fat metal below the handle. (I am glad that the other one LT is back after years with you .) can you make some nice pics about your last LT Ben Ben |

Yes, the other one of yours is a top piece too.
I agree that the LT and the Parang Nyabur are very close to each other but as usual some individual variations show up now and then. For instance the crowit of my LT #2 is very close to a kundieng of the Nyabur. It's too dark here now and I am almost never at home during daylight. So it will take some time before I will take pictures of the last months acquisitions. Michael |

While waiting for Arjan's pictures here are some of the LT I only had eBay pictures of before.
The blade, which I have cleaned, is very plain without any engravings. The hilt is quite unusual too. Michael |
