Default knife from Philippines?

What are your opinion about this knife? seems Philippines to me, but the seller bought it in Venezuela and told me it was an american bowie. I think the sheath is made later than the knife. Do you know the meaning of word "ANV" ?
thanks

Carlos

Hello Carlos,

the hilt doesn't look Filipino to me. Also the blade shape doesn't seem to have indigenous Filipino influence. My best guess would be that it might be latin american rather than a spanish influenced Filipino piece...

Regards,
Kai

Hi Carlos,
I'm not sure that this is a Philippine piece either but the blade does kind of reminds me of some Visayan Bolos that I've seen. The grip also reminds me of the horse hoof style that are used on some of them. There is one example in Plates From Krieger's, Combination Piercing and Chopping Bolos item #4 that looks similar to yours.

The carving motifs on the hilt remind me more of Indonesian work than the Philippines. As for the letters, i think this might be a custom job and they are probably the owner's initials.

Stone also has a similar piece in a pierced horn scabbard (under "bolo") and calls it Filipino.....

I have seen a talibon done in a similar style of carving with pierced horn scabbard.

I tend to think this as PI.......

The only problem is that each scabbard is one of a kind for each one of a kind piece. You would need to have one made for it.

Hi Carlos

Your bolo seems Philippine to me perhaps from Batangas or Ilocos I had a horse head knife with a similar motif a few years ago. Look at this old thread. Maybe a scabbard like this one?
